Bensersiel Coastal Resilience and Mobility Strategy

Mobi­lity, Tourism and Climate Adapt­a­tion in Coas­tal Regions 

Esens-Benser­siel, a coas­tal district of the town of Esens on Germany‘s North Sea coast, is facing major chal­lenges
rela­ted to climate change, sea-level rise and incre­asing extreme weather events.

As part of a multi­di­sci­pli­nary consor­tium consis­ting of mobi­lity plan­ners, tourism experts and land­scape archi­tects,
Planer­so­cie­tät contri­bu­ted to a feasi­bi­lity study evalua­ting two alter­na­tive flood protec­tion and coas­tal deve­lo­p­ment scena­rios. The objec­tive was not only to streng­then climate resi­li­ence, but also to assess the long-term impacts on mobi­lity, tourism, public space, nature conser­va­tion and regio­nal development.

The study combi­ned SWOT analy­ses, land-use assess­ments, mobi­lity scena­rios and imple­men­ta­tion pathways to
evaluate the oppor­tu­ni­ties and chal­lenges of each option. Local autho­ri­ties, regio­nal stake­hol­ders and resi­dents were actively invol­ved through work­shops and public dialo­gue formats.

Planersocietät‘s contri­bu­tion focu­sed on deve­lo­ping future-proof mobi­lity solu­ti­ons and asses­sing how the trans­port system could support a resi­li­ent, acces­si­ble and attrac­tive coas­tal desti­na­tion under chan­ging envi­ron­men­tal conditions.
